There’s nothing more pleasant for a future patient than getting to know more about the surgeon he or she trusts, Dr, Francisco Bucio, vastly known as a professional plastic surgeon both in Mexico and the United States, is one of those men able to display a great love toward his patients since he had himself a terrible accident during an earthquake and had his right hand destroyed. He was then, ultimately, a patient himself of many successful plastic reconstructive surgeries that allowed him to recover a full use of his hand and to continue his professional practice.  Warm and generous, he answered our questions.

Which is the part you like the best in the practice of cosmetic surgery?

What I like the best in the practice of Cosmetic Surgery is to be able to transfer my patients’ lives through a combination of Art—art was my youthful passion—with the knowledge of reconstructive plastic surgery, whether it’s improving their features, reestablishing the lost juvenile aspect or repairing the body damaged by pregnancy or body fat.

Tell us a little bit about you and your background. 

I was born in Mexico City and I studied Medicine in the UNAM, the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the specialty of Plastic Surgery in the General Hospital of Mexico, in México DF, in the first Plastic Surgery Training Program in Mexico, with a fellowship in Experimental Microsurgery at the Davis Medical Center in San Francisco, under the direction of Dr. Harry Buncke, the “Father of Microsurgery” (the doctor who reconstructed my own hand.) Since 1989. I started my own private practice in the city of Tijuana, where, in 1990 I also attended patients as a volunteer in the General Hospital of Tijuana.

Which are the areas in which you specialize?

I mainly specialize in Body Contouring Surgery. This includes Liposculpture, Butt lifting, Augmentation, Reduction and Lifting of Breasts, Tummy reduction, Change of image post-delivery, and post Bariatric surgery with remodeling of the body, butt, arms and legs.

Is there any favorite procedure that you use and why?

LIPOSCULPTURE! First, because, in my opinion, it’s the most useful technique in itself: It’s predictable and is gone through time’s test. Also because we use it as a part or auxiliary procedure of many Plastic Surgery techniques, such as Face Contouring, Breasts Lifting, Lipo-abdominoplasty, etc. And, besides, because the BODY FAT is a natural and native source of reconstructive materials for the corrective augmentation or the rejuvenating procedures, So, instead of disposing it, we use it in the same procedure to augment and improve other parts of the body. The best example is the butt lifting, that I have performed with great success during the past thirty years,

How do you keep up to date in the latest techniques?

Assisting to the Local, National, and International meetings of the following Plastic Surgery Professional Associations: AMCPER, ASPS, and ISAPS. Also, through the constant interaction with colleagues of my specialty and other related specialties, through personal collaboration and virtual communication.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I’m a family man. I practice physical exercises every morning, particularly swimming, I read a lot, particularly history and novels and I’m an autodidact in Italian language through the classics in audiobooks.
