What is Canthoplasty?
If you aren’t satisfied with your eyes’ overall shape and size, you might be interested in a canthoplasty procedure. There are many eyelid surgeries that can help address different types of problems, from saggy skin to small eyes to deep bags under the eyes; plastic surgery has a fix! Today we are talking to those who are unhappy with the aspect and size of their eyes, who have saggy eyelids, who were born with droopy eyes, or who have so much excess skin in their eyelids that even have trouble when blinking. If this sounds like a problem you’d like to fix, then you might be interested in learning more about canthoplasty surgery.
Let us tell you all about canthoplasty and its wonders!
What Is Canthoplasty Surgery?
Canthoplasty is a cosmetic and reconstructive surgery that can fix the outer corner of the eye, restoring skin tone, lifting the eyelid, and creating a more “almond-shaped” eye.
This reconstructive surgical procedure is also called lateral canthoplasty because it focuses on reshaping and repositioning the outer corner of the eye, called the lateral canthus. The lateral canthus is the upper outer corner of your eye, where your upper eyelid and lower eyelid form a horizontal “v.”
Who Is a Good Candidate for Canthoplasty Reconstructive Surgery?
People of all ages and with diverse physical attributes can benefit from canthoplasty surgery. For example, some people are naturally born with almond-shaped eyes and start losing eyelid definition as they age. Others are born with droopy eyelids or inverted eyes with no visible fold on the eyelids. Lateral canthoplasty can help fix and even create a defined shape of the eye and eyelid, making it look bigger and more lifted.
Canthoplasty is also performed as corrective surgery for patients who didn’t obtain a successful result after a blepharoplasty.
Canthoplasty and Blepharoplasty: How Are They Different?
Canthoplasty surgery should not be confused with the better-known blepharoplasty, another type of eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty is a rejuvenation procedure that focuses on removing excess skin from the lower eyelids or upper eyelids that have become lax due to age, without modifying the shape or size of the eye.
Many patients benefit the most from combining a lateral canthoplasty to lift, enlarge and reshape the eye with a blepharoplasty to eliminate under-eye bags and expression lines.
How Is Canthoplasty Surgery Performed?
Canthoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. During a canthoplasty, the surgeon cuts through the muscle from the inside of the eyelid to adjust the lateral canthus. Your surgeon can lift the intersection of the upper and lower eyelids, in order to have the outside corner of the eye slightly raised in relation to the inner corner, giving an almond shape with smooth skin.
After the surgical procedure, your eyes look brighter, bigger, more alert, and more awake.
Recovering from Canthoplasty Eyelid Surgery
Recovery from canthoplasty takes 7 to 10 days, depending on the patient. Most patients will see some swelling and bruising that will decrease over the first 2 weeks.
As with all surgeries, minor redness and swelling can take several more weeks to months to fully disappear, but they’re minimal.
Does Canthoplasty Hurt?
Your board-certified surgeon will make sure you don’t feel any pain during the surgery. Recovery will be slightly uncomfortable at first, but your doctor will prescribe pain medication to keep the pain at bay.
How Much Does Canthoplasty Cost?
Canthoplasty surgery cost is approximately $1,700 USD. This cost includes the board-certified plastic surgeon fee, the anesthesia, the anesthesiologist, and the facility fee. Keep in mind that the total price of the procedure will vary depending on your needs and aesthetic goals. After a quick, complimentary one-on-one consultation with our plastic surgeon, you’ll receive a personalized estimate.
